Cowgirls win two at the Cowgirl Classic
 (Posted Sat 08:00 am)
The Edna Cowgirls hosted the Cowgirl Classic Aug. 26 and 28, facing in-county rival Ganado to start their tournament play, winning in three after a rough first game, 13-25, 25-6, 15-5. The Cowgirls are 11-7 on the year.
Danielle Lopez led Edna with a baker’s dozen scores and Misty Robertson scored 10 points. Madison Kucera pounded home eight more. Kaeleigh Alex and BreAnna Yendrey were active blocking at the net.
“This was our first home game of the season,” Head Coach Lynn Robertson said. “My girls were very nervous in the first game, but came back big to win.”
The Cowgirls welcomed Bay City to continue tourney play Aug. 26, falling in two, 23-25, 19-25.
Alex earned seven scores and earned a defensive nod for her net play. Yendrey hit five points and Rhea Lea Hafernick added four more.
The Cowgirls faced Bloomington in the last day of tourney play Aug. 28, winning in three, 25-17, 25-18, 25-14...
Indians go right back at it
by Joe Palacios
 (Posted Fri 08:00 am)
The Ganado Indians looked as if they had not skipped a beat from last season as they traveled to Hallettsville for their season opener, beating the Brahmas 35-2. The game started with the Brahmas moving the ball offensively, but the solid defense for the Indians of senior Wesley Demicelli and juniors Trey Thedford and Josh Labay helped put a halt to the Brahmas’ attack.
The Indians moved the ball on the ground with the help of Anthony Parks, Derrick Hlavaty and Cutberto Ramos clearing a hole for runningbacks Labay and Demicelli. The Indians would strike first on a 3-yard run by Labay with 4:27 in the first quarter, putting the Indians up. The point-after by Brian Bubela was good, making the score 7-0 Ganado. Hallettsville would again try to piece their offense together only to have Thedford pick up the first interception of the game and Hallettsville’s first of six turnovers.
The Indians continued their offensive attack through the second quarter with 8:17 on the clock. Labay found his way up the middle for the Indians’ second touchdown, putting the Indians up by 14 with Bubela’s point-after successful. The Indians would return to the field offensively with the help of an interception by Demicelli in Brahma territory...
Cowboys down Jays
by Cipi Palacios
 (Posted Thu 08:00 am)
The Edna Cowboys opened their 2010 season on the road with a big win over the Needville Blue Jays 21 to 7. The Cowboys were not only successful in their win, they also looked impressive on both sides of the ball, including special teams.
The Blue Jays won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball to begin the game. Their offense ate away at the clock when midway through the first quarter the Jays struck first using a 35-yard reverse pass to set up a two-yard touchdown run by their fullback Dylan Fuchs. With 6:33 in the first quarter, the Jays took the lead 7 to 0.
Edna went to work, moving the ball on the ground using the massive front five “Wrecking Crew” of Cody Pemberton, Ryan Mahaffey, Phil Palacios, Mac Long and Max Rosales to plow the field, giving running room for Matt Brzozowski and Adam Boston. The Wrecking Crew continued to hold the line for Edna senior quarter back Manny Freeland as he connected passes to senior wide receiver Deion Barnes, moving the Cowboys into Blue Jay territory. With 2:30 left in the first quarter, Freeland avoided the sack of two Blue Jay defenders and connected with his tight end Trey Young, who made a spectacular one-handed grab...

Shiner upset by Cobras
by Paul Harrison
 (Posted Wed 08:00 am)
The Industrial Cobras opened their season at home against ranked 1A opponent Shiner Aug. 27. The Cobras picked up where they left off last year, racking up over 200 yards rushing while the defense stymied a potent opposing offense as the Snakes showed quick-strike capabilities, scoring 21 points by the end of the third quarter and keeping the Comanches off the board.
“Every time you take a new team into a new season, even when you have a lot of seniors returning, you always take on a new character of a football team,” Head Coach Doug Kuhlmann said. “Their first game, to play somebody of Shiner’s ability, I’m pleased with the way we played tonight. There’s no doubt we had to play assignment football on defense and offensively, to move the ball we had to pick up their scheme with our blocking assignments. I’m really pleased overall, for this early in the year, and for them to do as well as we did with those two things. No doubt, it’s full a team game, but I think offensive line deserves a lot of recognition, I was very pleased with their blocking tonight; and on defense, everywhere, you have to cover the whole field with that offense that they play.”
Industrial spread the ball around, running out of their staple wishbone formation, but showed looks with multiple flankers...

Facing East Bernard to start tourney play Aug. 12, Edna won the short series of three 21-25, 25-17, and 25-20. Kaeleigh Alex led the ‘Girls, serving 17 points. Misty Robertson served up a baker’s dozen at 13 and BreAnna Yendrey put up eight points off her serves.

Yendrey and Madison Kucera scored six points each and Katrina Jackson added four more kills.

Football is king, the rest of us are just kinda living here

There is something almost manic about the approach of football season in Texas. We’re lethargic about our pro baseball, frustrated by our pro football (lately, anyway) mixed on basketball, but high school football? Now that’s something everyone can enjoy.
What is it, particularly in small towns, that works the state into a frenzy the closer we get to September? Ok, out here it could be argued that frankly, there isn’t much else to do, and whether you want to admit it, your life is ruled by the football schedule. You might not be in football. You might not have a kid in football. Your grandkids may not be in football. But it’s Friday night and that squirrely cabin fever feeling is creeping up so you call your friend. He’s going to the game. His girlfriend’s sister is at the game. Within seven degrees, you’re involved. In Texas? In small town Texas?? Three degrees, max. Try it.
Okay, say it’s not you, or someone you know, or someone they know, football is effecting you in ways you aren’t aware of...

Piranhas licking chops heading into the State Meet

 (Posted 8/5/2010 08:00 am)

Pauline Negrete, Sarah Weinmann and Kristopher Black work on kicking at swim practice
There is no denying a family atmosphere as you watch the Edna Piranha Swim Team practice. Grandparents and sisters, parents and brothers watch and chat while arms glisten in the windmill motion of the freestyle and legs churn sapphire water into a froth. The excitement is palpable talking to the swimmers headed to the State Swim Meet in Waco Aug. 5 at Waco Water Park on 900 Lake Shore Dr. in Waco. A history of excellence helps to motivate the swimmers, from bite-sized through high school.
Jonathan Anthony, son of Kimberly Anthony, joined the Piranhas in second grade when a friend of his joined. When the friend stopped going, Jonathan was already hooked and kept with it. He has now qualified for the state swim meet for a decade running now.
“Just get your mind set on what you want to do and try to hit your goal,” Jonathan said about preparing for state. “This year I want to go to San Diego [to nationals]. I’ve come close.”
He has qualified for nationals four years running, and hopes his fifth time is the charm.
“Making state means you have to work harder, try harder.” Jonathan said...
Not just another brick in the wall, a moving part

Industrial's Ricky Redus
Ricky Redus may not be a name Industrial fans are as familiar with as some. Playing, fullback and defensive tackle, the 220 lb. senior is one of the first helmets hitting the pile, and among the last out of it after the whistle. Spending most of his time on-field in one scrum or another, one may be hard pressed to pick his number out of a lineup. Now combine playing less visible positions with the scouting snub that smaller schools receive; one wonders what a player needs to do to play after graduation, and ideally, turn their performance into a scholarship.
“I’m hoping to end up playing football somewhere next year, definitely,” Redus said. “I’m very proactive during the summer. I go to a bunch of the football camps at different universities and these recruiting camps.”
Ricky, the son of Dan and Karan Cockrell, traveled to Southern Arkansas University early in the summer and the National Underclassmen Ultimate 100 camp with top players in his grade from the all over the area in Duncanville in July. He attended the Brad Wright Football Camp at Texas State over the weekend of July 24. The camps provide recruits with combine numbers in addition to position skills work. Good combine numbers are bait for recruiters that can be sent out even when an athlete is not necessarily being scouted...

Industrial pushes to quarterfinals at State 7-on-7
by Paul Harrison
 (Posted 7/21/2010)
The Edna and Industrial seven on seven teams traveled to the State Seven on Seven Tournament in College Station July 8-9 to play in Division II, the 1A-2A-3A class. Round robin four-team pool play on July 8 seeded teams for tournament play starting the next morning.
In pool play, Edna fell to Archer City 39-26 and Boyd 30-21, but beat division champ Gatesville 33-26. They would fall in the first round of the consolation bracket to Wellington 34-24.
In pool play, Industrial dropped a game to Abilene 33-20, trumped Grandview 26-20 but fell to Wimberly at the end of the day. In the second day’s play in the consolation bracket, Industrial rolled over Ingleside 38-12 and Reicher 38-33 in the following round before falling to Hardin 19-21 in the quarterfinals.
“You see a lot of different schools other than the teams we play in the region,” said Austin Smalley, returning quarterback for Industrial...

Thunder clapped after a last-innning turnaround
by Brian Peters
 (Posted 7/16/2010 08:00 am)
The Jackson County Thunder began the South Central Texas Amateur League playoffs Saturday, July 10, defeating the regular season champion Bernardo Bears 9-4 ten minutes from baseball midnight on the road, but fell to the Victoria Rosebuds 11-1 the following day in the league championship round. It would prove to be an exciting weekend.
Michael Vickery took the hill for Jackson County after they failed to score in the top of the first and showed the Bears what he had in store for them, beginning the game with two strike outs before inducing a come-backer, catching a hit that came right back to him to end the bottom half of the inning. Aided by some great Thunder defense, Vickery held the Bears hitless through the first four innings, but the game remained scoreless as the Thunder were also held down by the Bernardo hurler. Jackson County looked to break the deadlock as they mounted a rally in the sixth, but they failed to cross the plate despite loading the bases...

Thunder slump but still get in
by Brian Peters
 (Posted 7/10/2010 08:00 am)
The Jackson County Thunder traveled to La Grange on Saturday, July 3 for a pair of “home” games versus the second place La Grange Demons. The heavy rains attributed to Hurricane Alex necessitated the change in venue and made for a couple of sloppy games in which the Thunder would drop game one 13-6 and game two 16-6.
La Grange began the scoring by tallying five unearned runs in the top of the first off of Jackson County starter Kris Looper, who took the loss despite yielding just one earned run in five and a third innings pitched.
The Thunder responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Kensey Allen groundout that plated Josh Adams, who began the inning with a single. Jackson County tacked on two more runs in the third before leaving the bases loaded to end the inning...
In the moment: Josh Labay takes it as it comes
by Paul Harrison
 (Posted 7/8/2010 08:00 am)
The first impression most people had of Ganado junior Josh Labay this past year was on the football field, as the “skinny kid” took the hand-off and disappeared into the shoving, grunting pile of the line, then suddenly reappeared on the other side, seemingly without breaking stride.
“Last year, coach said I had pretty good [field] vision,” Labay said. “It’s just what I have. In practice, I couldn’t see the holes when I wasn’t in, but I could see them when I was in.”
The youngest of Mike and Cathy Labay was a double honorable mention All-State selection at runningback and free safety.
“It’s kinda crazy, when I first heard about it I was shocked,” Josh admitted. “I really wasn’t expecting anything that big. It kinda took my breath away. My brother [Seth] called and told me about it, so I looked on the internet and there it was. It shocked me more than anything.”
Josh has committed himself to summer workouts this year as he hopes to draw a little bit of scouting attention. He has already earned a little extra attention, being named one of 1A’s players to watch in the “Texas Football” annual Fall preview edition...
They need more than a shoe deal to be 'Like Mike'
by Paul Harrison
 (Posted 7/2/2010 08:00 am)
Ever since he retired, again, after the 1998 season, before he would come back out for two token years with the Washington Wizards after three years off, we’ve heard one player after another heralded as “the Next Michael Jordan.” I am here to show you there is no comparison. I’m using stats from what I figure is the only truly “official” source, NBA.com, and have compiled it all side-by-side in a graph for easy comparison.
Let’s not waste time. For the sake of comparison, I’m keeping my Like Mikes to a short list of legitimate throne claims: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Dwayne Wade. Understand this: I’m not saying these guys are bums and can’t play. Love him or hate him, Kobe could retire today and be a first-round ballot Hall of Famer, and if LeBron and Wade continue to play the way they have, they should be locks to get in as well. I’m just saying, as Magic Johnson once said, there's Michael Jordan and then there is the rest of us.
Okay, firstly, in a 14-year career, including the two years with Washington at 38-years-old, he averaged 30.1 points per game. That’s 4.8 ppg better than Kobe, who has averaged 30 or better three times (02-03, 05-06 and 06-07), 2.3 ppg more than LeBron and 4.7 ppg more than Wade so far in their careers. LeBron needs to average 32 ppg if he plays another 10 years and Wade would have to average 35 ppg for another six years to match that mark. Kobe needs 40 ppg over the next seven years if he retires at 40. This is just shooting the ball...
Thunder drops a couple

Ross Rakowitz pitches for the Thunder
The Jackson County Thunder traveled to the Bear’s den in Bernardo June 27 to face the league leaders in a late season double header. Thanks to several untimely defensive miscues, the Thunder squandered two great pitching performances and dropped both games to the Bears by scores of 6-4 and 10-4.
Game one began under the hot sun at 2 p.m. as both teams were held scoreless in the first. The Thunder got on the board first with an Aaron Peters walk and a Glenn Sparkman RBI double in the top of the second. The Bears quickly tied the game with the help of the Thunder defense, committing a two out error which led to an unearned run. After Bernardo took a 2-1 lead in the third, the Thunder wrestled it away in the fifth on an Aaron Garcia two-run homer to left field. Unfortunately, the lead was short lived as the wheels came off for Jackson County in the bottom of the inning...
