Economic greed [150] Ecological disasters

In the United States, there have been many examples of economic greed leading to ecological and environmental disasters. The most recent and probably the most serious is the situation in the Gulf of Mexico resulting from the oil spill.
A foreign-owned company apparently used unsafe procedures to decrease costs. The result of their economic greed has destroyed numerous critical habitats and ecological sensitive sites affecting many species of birds, fish, mammals and reptiles.
It will take many decades for these sites to recover and some sites will be changed forever. The ecology of these species will also be changed forever and some species may become extinct as a result of the oil spill.
All of these effects have adversely affected the ability of many families to earn a living – all at the expense from the economic greed of a foreign company.
If a dam is placed across the Lavaca River, many effects similar to the Gulf oil spill disaster will occur. The economic greed of a company owned by a family that are not U.S. citizens will lead to an ecological disaster in our country.
There is an abundance of many species of reptiles, fish, birds and mammals that live in or along the Lavaca River and its sloughs and in the trees and open areas.
Many of these habitats will be destroyed – covered by water. The ecology of the bays and estuaries into which the river flows will be changed forever after existing for millions of years – all for economic greed. Many of these animals face the same situation as a result of the dam as you would if your home burned and you had no place to go.
Are the citizens of Jackson County going to allow this potential ecological disaster to occur for the economic greed of a foreign family? Does a foreign family have the right to take away the ability of families in our county to earn a living by covering their land with water for their private economic gain? Can we allow taking the private assets of our citizens so a foreign family can make money?
This is my opinion of the situation.
