Ganado sophomore Leah Staff has been to the state golf tournament both years in high school, last year with the team, this year under her own power. The third daughter of Betty Jo and Dale Staff knocked off 36 strokes from her 2009 score and finished 17th in 1A with a 182 with eight pars, up from 218 the year before when she finished 36th.
Her score would put her in the top 20 in 2A, top two-thirds in 3A and 4A.
Oh, and she just started playing last year.
“My sisters played, so I played around in the backyard, I didn’t know what I was doing,” Staff said.
The boyfriend of the oldest sister, Amanda, would come over and play around with his clubs in the back yard, and as is the case with younger siblings, pretty soon the younger Staff girls, Mallory and Leah, were begging their parents to play as well.
They arranged for the two older girls to take lessons. Leah watched the older pair play and picked up the game watching them practice.
