Edna woman arrested for exploiting the elderly

An Edna woman was arrested on Aug. 25 on warrants charging her with three counts of injury to the elderly or disabled by exploitation.
Felicia Tramaine Williams, 30, of Edna, an employee of the Port Lavaca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, is suspected of making "improper video recordings" of the nursing home residents, according to a Port Lavaca Police Department news release.
According to the release, Williams was terminated on Aug. 13 as a result of an internal investigation at the nursing home. The findings of the investigation were turned over to the police department.

There is just one month until the Jackson County Youth Fair and the next few weeks will be full of preparations by Fair Board members to ensure the 2010 fair is a success.
The Jackson County Youth Fair Queen and Junior Miss Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the Jackson County Services Building. The Little Mr. and Miss Pageant will be held before the Queen’s Pageant at 2 p.m. at the services building.

The fast-growing birds born that day will be selected for for the Brams’ Jackson County Youth Fair entries. Interest and support for the Texana Groundwater Conservation District seems to be growing, gauging by the standing-room only crowd of Jackson County residents who attended the Aug. 25 public meeting at the Jackson Electric Co-op.
Board members Michael Skalicky, president, Jim Revel, secretary, Ray Brundrett, treasurer, and Robert Martin were on hand to answer questions and listen to comments from those attending.

IISD sets new tax rate

Industrial ISD school board reviewed and approved the 2010-2011 proposed tax rate at their August 9 board meeting.
The new tax rates are $1.04 for maintenance and operating and $.3325 for interest and sinking. The total tax rate is $1.3725 which is down slightly from last year.
Four million dollars of the district’s fund balance was approved by the board for designation for construction, equipment, and risk management items.
“We maintain a higher than average fund balance because of our location along the coast, and these reserves would be needed in the event of a serious storm” said Tony More

The Jackson County Herald-Tribune and several local businesses sponsored the Top Dog and Top Cat contest to find the cutest pets in Jackson County. Members of Happy Tails judged the entries and selected first through third place winners in each category. Winners were presented with prizes with a total value of more than $600 that were donated by area businesses. The Jackson County Herald-Tribune presented a check for $250 to Cherie Robinson with Happy Tails Animal Shelter. There were five winners in the Jackson County Herald-Tribune’s first Top Dog and Top Cat contest. The Edna City Council has two new council members who were recently appointed to serve their districts.
Ray Chavarria assumed the District V seat following the election in May when no one filed for the position formerly held by Mario Mojica. William Selders was appointed to the District II position following the death of long-time councilman Lorrian Jones.

Inteplast seeks county's support for expansion

County Commissioners approved an order nominating the Inteplast Group, Ltd. for a Texas Enterprise Project at the Aug. 23 Commissioners’ Court meeting. The project is a five-year commitment from Inteplast to retain all positions that are currently in existence with the company. Melissa Munoz, with Ryan, Inc., addressed the court clarifying the differences between the Texas Enterprise Project and the Texas Enterprise Fund.

Cowgirls earn fourth

The Edna Cowgirls traveled to play in the tournament at Shiner Aug. 20-21, taking fourth place overall. BreAnna Yendrey and Misty Robertson earned all-tourney honors. Edna is 8-5 in the season thus far.
The Cowgirls opened tourney play against Flatonia Aug. 20, winning 25-17, 25-23.
Rhea Lea Hafernick led Edna with 10 points. Robertson scored eight more and Yendrey finished with a seven-point game. Kaeleigh Alex was active against the net, blocking the Flatonia offense.

With the completion of the new Edna Junior High School, Edna ISD board members are looking at the last major project the district’s facility master plan – a new high school. Bob Henderson and Dusty Traylor of RBC Capital Markets and financial advisors to the district were at the Aug. 16 board meeting to discuss the district’s options regarding a bond election to fund the new campus.
"We are very excited and hopeful about the possibility of building a new high school,” said Superintendent Bob Wells.
